Should you go to uni straight from school?
After you finish your HSC, you might not feel ready to go to uni.
All universities accept students who haven't come straight from school.
You should consider your own situation when deciding if you should go to uni straight from school.
To help, here are benefits for both options:
If you go straight from school
- Some of your friends might be at uni at the same time.
- At least half of your fellow students will be the same age as you.
- You can use your essay and exam skills from school while they're fresh.
- You'll finish your degree earlier in your career.
- You may be more eligible for companies' graduate recruitment schemes.
- You'll have fewer commitments and you might be in a better position to study abroad for part of your degree.
If you go later
- You'll have more time to decide exactly what degree you want to do.
- You might develop some work experience that can help you get into uni and move into different jobs when you graduate.
- You can save up to meet some of your uni costs.
- You might find an employer who is willing to sponsor you to do a degree.
- You will be more mature and dedicated to your study – and more likely to do well in your degree.
- You can study for TAFE qualifications to see if you really like a field of study – these qualifications will also help you get into uni as a mature student.
